We examine slides and prints of images for discussion of aesthetic issues and visual representations of the event. Technical considerations such as film choices, cameras and other equipment are also discussed. New album option: the PhotoBook

I'm excited to announce a new type of album I'm now offering: the PhotoBook, a very nice and less expensive alternative to flush-mount albums.

These bound albums have hard covers that come in either black linen or with a wrap-around photo. The pages are about the thickness of a postcard and are protected with a glossy coating.

Like my flush-mount albums, these lay flat when opened. PhotoBooks are great as a stand-alone album, or they make wonderful companion albums for parents, siblings and friends. The PhotoBook comes in several sizes, from 4x4 to 8x12.

I'll post pricing information very soon.

NYT Photographer Ángel Franco

New York Times photojournalist, Angel Franco (left) and Times columnist Dan Barry in The Journal newsroom today.
I had the pleasure of meeting New York Times photojournalist, Ángel Franco who works with Times columnist Dan Barry on a regular Times feature, This Land.

They stopped by The Providence Journal newsroom this afternoon. Dan worked as a reporter here for many years.

Franco's pictures are hard to miss. His eye-arresting images illustrate the quirky people and places that Barry writes about, and usually appear as very wide horizontal images in the Times.

Franco is among the few newspaper photographers left who still use real film. His wide pictures are taken with a Hasselblad Xpan panoramic camera, with a 30mm lens. This unique camera uses 35mm film and creates a full-frame panorama. Franco also uses a traditional Hasselblad with 120mm film. He told me he's got a full darkroom in his basement at Connecticut home, as well as a digital editing station upstairs.

Like The Journal, The New York Times no longer has darkroom facilities. So in New York, Franco said he has his film processed by an outside lab. The negatives are then scanned.

He did have a digital Leica around his neck today. He was on deadline today so digital was the way to go.

Niki and Tom's Wedding

Niki and Tom had one of the most romantic wedding receptions I've been to. I got a hint of that as soon as I got to Tom's house on their wedding day. He and Niki had been texting each other all morning. Tom let me photograph one of her messages to him.

They were married at the Open Table of Christ Church in Providence. We did the portraits at Roger Williams Park in the Japanese Gardens and at the Carousel. The reception was at the Kirkbrae Country Club, a really nice venue in Lincoln, Rhode Island.

Amanda and Steven's Wedding

Amanda and Steven's wedding was awesome. They were married in a beautiful old Catholic church in Providence that serves the area's many Portuguese residents. After the service we had plenty of time for portraits, so we went to the Rhode Island State House, and then to Roger Williams Park, both great places for wedding portraits. The reception was at Venus De Milo in nearby Swansea, Mass., which is well equipped for big weddings like Amanda and Steven's. It was a wonderful party.

Here's the slideshow from the day.
